I believe the children are our future….

I work at a large financial institution and they rolled out an internal program called Coffee Connect. In it, you fill out a few likes and then some algorithm matches you with someone who shares the same likes. I’ve been matched with 6 people and I finally met someone. Because of Spike’s death, I wound up taking a personal day but we rescheduled for this week and met.

The older I get, the funnier it seems that everyone is so young and while my generation (I’m a Gen X) and older seem to have nothing nice to say about the young Millennials, I think the younger people are more altruistic and truly wired in a way where they will make things happen. Look at the kids from Marjory Stoneman Douglas school in Parkland, Florida – they turned their tragedy into rage to enact change. When I was younger I really thought the world would change for the better because my generation would take over but now I don’t know how true that is. But these younger kids – I have all the faith in the world in them.

The young intern I met at my job is working there for the Summer but has plans for the future and beyond. I loved her plan to try many things out now before settling on a career. I think that’s so smart makes a lot of sense in this day and age. I grew up being taught that if I worked hard, I would be rewarded. Longevity at a job isn’t always a measure of success and there are more important things. This younger generation definitely understands that and makes decisions based on more unselfish concerns. I think on that and have hope that the world my kids inherit won’t be such a side show circus.
