Friday Family Film Night: THE POWER OF THE DOG review

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE POWER OF THE DOG (2021), which is currently streaming on Netflix. Written and directed by Jane Campion and based on the novel by Thomas Savage; the film follows two brothers, Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George (Jesse Plemons) who in 1925, own a very successful cattle ranch. They are the two most opposites of people – Phil is highly intelligent, charismatic but cruel, while George is a quiet man who longs for more out of life. George forms a relationship with Rose (Kristen Dunst) and they eventually marry, much to the displeasure of Phil who terrorizes Rose, which in turn impacts her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Solid performances, a good script, lush cinematography and outstanding set pieces make this a strong contender in the upcoming Oscar’s race. The film has a run time of 2 h 6 m and is rated R. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
