In which the Mister joins me in reviewing THE 39 STEPS (1935), from John Buchan’s novel with a dialogue credit to Ian Hay and an adaptation credit to Charles Bennett, the film is directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The film centers on Richard Hannay (Robert Donat), a Canadian tourist in London who becomes entangled in a massive espionage plot after a spy (Lucie Mannheim) is murdered in his flat, leaving him as the prime suspect. Hannay goes on the run to Scotland to find the truth behind the mysterious “39 Steps” organization, all while evading a nationwide police manhunt and the enemy agents pursuing him. During his desperate journey, he is reluctantly handcuffed to a skeptical, beautiful woman named Pamela (Madeleine Carroll), and together they must uncover the secret of the stolen British military information to prove his innocence. The film clocks in at 1 h and 26 m, is rated Approved.
