In which the Mister and Kid 2 join me in reviewing KUNG FU HUSTLE (2004), from writers Stephen Chow, Kan-Cheung Tsang, Xin Huo and Man-Keung Chan, the film is directed by Stephen Chow. In 1940s Shanghai, a small-time con man named Sing (Stephen Chow) dreams of joining the notorious, tuxedo-clad Axe Gang and attempts to prove his worth by extorting the residents of a run-down housing complex called Pig Sty Alley. To his surprise, the humble community is actually home to legendary kung fu masters living in hiding, who easily repel the gang’s initial attempts at intimidation. As the humiliated Axe Gang hires increasingly deadly and supernatural assassins to retaliate, Sing is caught in the crossfire of a cartoonish, high-octane war that forces him to choose between his criminal ambitions and his own untapped potential. The film clocks in at 1 h 39 m, is rated R and is currently available on Tubi but also to buy/rent on Prime Video. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
