Friday Family Film Night: EX MACHINA review

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing EX MACHINA (2014), currently streaming on HBO Max. The film, written and directed by Alex Garland follows Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) a shy programmer at BlueBook who’s won the opportunity to spend some 1 on 1 time with the company founder, Nathan (Oscar Isaac), an obviously eccentric and brilliant man who has an ulterior motive for having Caleb come to his isolated mountain retreat. Nathan confides to Caleb that he was specifically selected because Nathan is at the cusp of unveiling the first true AI and he wants Caleb’s assistance in administering a Turing Test to Ava (Alicia Vikander), the AI. The film is a brilliant piece of cinema with tremendous acting and a solid, tight, flawless script. The story opens up a lot of ethics questions that cannot be ignored. This film is a MUST WATCH. The film is 1 h and 48 m and is rated R. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
