Friday Family Film Night: CODA review

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing CODA (2021), which is currently streaming on Apple TV. Written and directed by Siân Heder, this film is a remake of La Famille Bélier from 2014. In this incarnation of the story, Ruby, (exceptionally played by Emilia Jones) is the only hearing member of the Rossi family – both parents Frank and Jackie (also exceptionally played by Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin) and her older brother Leo (in another brilliant performance by Daniel Durant) are deaf. Ruby, as her father mentions, has never been allowed to be a baby and carries a heavy weight on her shoulders as the only hearingperson in her family. Through the course of the film we see Ruby gain her footing and find her voice as she navigates her life, pursuesher dreams and falls in love. Exceptional storytelling and brilliant performances from all the cast make this a MUST WATCH. We have our fingers crossed for Troy who’s nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar and hope this film sweeps its other categories as well. The film has a run time of 1 h 51 m and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.
