I was recently conversing with the husband about filmmakers who aren’t nice but have made good movies. I sometimes find it hard to see a movie from someone who was not a good human. SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK has been making the rounds on the cable channels and I really like the movie a lot but find it hard to watch now after revisiting what a jerk the director is. My husband made the point that we watch these stories for the stories and should keep in mind the countless other cast and crews involved and support films not for the filmmakers but for all the other aspects of the production.
Today I watched MELANCHOLIA by Lars von Trier who has a reputation of being a jerk. I’ve stayed away from a lot of his films because I find it hard watching his movies with the knowledge of how he behaves on sets. But this movie is visually stunning, with excellent performances and a script that covers a lot of ideas. I really liked the film although get that its not for everyone. I appreciate the cast for building this world and making it a reality of sorts. I am thankful for creatives and storytellers.
