Today I watched THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER from 1955 which I really enjoyed. From a script by Nunnally Johnson from a novel by Davis Grubb, the film is directed by Charles Laughton and follows the story of a man who commits a robbery to provide for his down on their luck family. He goes to jail and because he murdered 2 men, is sent to be hanged as well, but not before confiding in his cellmate, exquisitely played by Robert Mitchum, a deranged “man of God” who tracks down the man’s widow and children with the sole purpose of getting his hands on the money for himself. I am sad that Laughton’s only directing credits are this and THE MAN ON THE EIFFEL TOWER, I think it would have been great to see other films he could have made. I highly recommend and you can see it on Tubi right now before it goes away.
